Financial Independence, Retire Early

What is Coast FIRE?

Coast FIRE asks whether investments already saved could grow to your full retirement target without additional investing. You would still need income or another way to cover living expenses before retirement.

How the target is calculated

Full FIRE target ÷ (1 + real annual return) ^ years until retirement = Coast target today

An illustrative example

For a $1,000,000 retirement target 30 years away, an illustrative 4% inflation-adjusted annual return gives a Coast target of about $308,319 today.

Choose Coast FIRE and set your target retirement age. Its chart assumes no further contributions. The return-range cards compare projected balances at that age.

What to keep in mind

The estimate is sensitive to both the growth assumption and time remaining. Reaching a modeled Coast target does not guarantee future returns or remove the need to cover current expenses.

These calculations are educational estimates. They use steady returns, not historical simulations, and do not model retirement withdrawals year by year. A 4% withdrawal rate is an illustrative assumption, not a guaranteed outcome.
